"In the Practice of Tolerance, one's enemy is the Best Teacher."

-His Holiness the Dalai Lama

How we find these teachers? Whether due to distance or desire, we often find it much easier to learn fromthose we know and agree with. Those people near us, and most like us.

Below, you will find some stories being shared by Bridges youth this year, students who have reached out across national borders and cultures. Finding their teachers, and being teachers.

"When we went to the forest, where the hermit monks live, we wanted to know what makes them happy? "-Tenzin Ghaki. On the recent Bridges workshop in Dharamsala, India, Bridges veteran student Gakyi and her friend Tari Kyi shared a story about their journey toward happiness. Click on the image to view the story.

Bridges' Shared Learning Model

At Bridges to Understanding, we believe direct exposure and shared learning is how we will to develop the ability to see a new perspective of ourselves and others. Bridges helps students develop the ability to see through other students' eyes through direct classroom to classroom projects and sharing.

Students in classrooms in urban cities in Washington state, in townships in South Africa, villages in Guatemala and Peru, in camps on the West Bank, and in children's villages Tibetan Refugee communities in India are finding out how different and how alike we all are. They are the best teachers for each other. And this is how we will build a more compassionate, better world.

Bridges students from Seattle, South Africa, Guatemala and India will participate in a major international event with the Dalai Lama when he visits Seattle in April 2008. For details on overall event, see Seeds of Compassion website: www.seedsofcompassion.net
